If you pick up an interior design magazine or scroll through social media, you’ll quickly notice that adding fresh flowers is an easy and inexpensive way to freshen up any space in your home. Whether you’re gathering clippings from your garden or picking up a bunch with your groceries, flowers add that little detail that can make any room feel special and pulled together.

3 Things to Consider When Adding Flowers to Your Home

Flower Selection

Before selecting your flowers, consider the style or feel you are wanting to create. Ask yourself are you wanting a look that’s bright and cheery or sophisticated and tranquil? Depending on the type of aesthetic you are trying to achieve, your flower selection will differ.

Bright & cheery = vibrant colors

Sophisticated & tranquil = white or monochromatic colors

Sweet & elegant = pastel colors

 Flower Placement

Once you’ve selected your flowers, you’ll want to consider where you plan to display your flowers. Placement will impact the size of the vase you use. For instance, if you are wanting a grand arrangement for a formal dining table or entry, then you’ll want to select a taller vase that can support a more substantial look. If you are adding an accent to an office desk or bookcase, you’ll most likely want to opt for something shorter.

Container Selection

Now that you’ve got the what and where, we need to discuss how. The type of vase or container that you select will affect how your fresh beauties are displayed. Besides height that was previously mentioned, you’ll want to consider 2 other factors:

Finish

The finish of the vase or container can either allow the flowers to be the star of the show or be a strong supporting cast-member. If you want your display to be all about the flowers, I recommend a simple, clear glass vase that let your flowers take center stage. Otherwise consider a more ornate vase that compliments your arrangement.

Mouth

The mouth opening of a vase should also be considered when selecting your container. If you are wanting a grander look, a larger mouth opening will allow a large bouquet to spread more keeping the flowers from looking cramped. However, if you are placing a single flower a narrower mouth opening (like a bottle) will give the stem more support.

There are things like floral wire and froggers that you can use as well to give your arrangement more structure. However, I like to keep things simple and straightforward… pop them in a vase and set them out to display.

One last tip… purchase a large bouquet from your farmer’s market and then break it into smaller arrangements. By breaking down a larger bouquet, you use a similar color palette that is repeated throughout your home for a cohesive look.
