Throws & pillows are one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to update a space. Just by changing out these pieces, you can take a living room from bright and cheery to warm and inviting. For those that like an ever evolving look, these elements can be switched out each season with minimal effort and are perfect for a 15 minute weekend challenge.

Here’s what to keep in mind when adding these versatile pieces to your home:

Color

Throws are a great way to repeat an accent color in your home. If you’re not quite sure where to begin in selecting a color, consider pulling an accent from art or a rug in the room you.

However, if you have a lot of colorful furnishings, go with something neutral to help ground things. Winter whites, soft grays, and warm tans play well with a variety of colors and can be used year round.

Or if you have neutral furnishings and décor, consider taking cues from the season you are in by selecting more vibrant colored accents in the Spring and earth tones for fall.

Fabric

When it comes to the type of fabric your throw is made of, we need to take some cues from functionality. Here are 3 additional things to think about:

Weight

A throw that you have on hand in the heat of summer is going to be very different than what you want in the dead of winter. We all can relate to snuggling up in a cozy throw next to the fire when the temperature drops. However, sometimes it’s nice to have a light knit throw available when you and your spouse can’t agree on the optimal A/C setting. Consider what season you’ll be using this throw in and let this be your guide to how heavy or bulky the throw should be.

Texture

Adding a throw to a room can also bring in some much needed texture. For instance, if you have a leather sofa, perhaps you want a faux fur or cable knit throw to bring some variety to the space. This tactile and visual change is a small detail that gives big impact.

Trim

Speaking of details… trim is a fun way to add a little extra character to a throw. Right now I’m loving pom-poms for a bit of whimsy, but tassels, fringe and faux fur are all other great trims for throws. And if you find a throw that you like but wish it had a little… more, trim is incredibly easy to stitch on for a one of a kind look.

Storage

Once you’ve got a couple of throws on hand you’ll want to consider storage. No one wants to pause a movie to run to a closet to snag a blanket. Baskets are a stylish way to store throws and have quick access to when you want to take the chill off. Coffee tables and ottoman’s with storage are great alternatives as well. And of course, you can never go wrong with draping your throw over the arm of a sofa or chair.

Fall is just around the corner and now is the perfect time to start considering how you want to cozy up your home. Changing out throws and pillows are an effortless way to give your home a quick update and family and friends will appreciate the additional touch of hospitality.
